Hi lovies! This week I wanted to talk about how I reached my first 100 email list subscribers, and emphasize on how important having an email list is.
What is an email list?
So glad you asked! Listen very closely… if you have a blog, you need an email list. Okay? You are really harming and hindering your success if you do not have an email list.
An email list is your OWN sacred list of subscribers that you can send emails out to! There are many email marketing websites to get started – when I did my research, I found that Mail Chimp was easily the best website to get started with. When you sign up for Mail Chimp, it is completely FREE up until you hit 2,000 subscribers, after that, you can easily switch over to a more affordable email marketing website if you wish.
Why is an email list so valuable?
Why is it NOT valuable is the question you should be asking seriously. This list is sacred because it is YOURS, entirely. The people who sign up to be on YOUR list will be sent things within your control. This is your chance to establish a personal relationship with your blog audience, include incentives, give back freebies to those who support.. etc.
But, most importantly, it will help tremendously if you plan to develop loyal audience members who will potentially build trust within you, therefore, if you decide to launch things within your blogging career, such as courses or eBooks, this list will be your potential customers!
How do you set up an email list?
This post is going to be focused on HOW I got 100 subscribers, and the techniques I used, however, if you are looking for some one on one coaching, I am offering services currently! I would be more than happy to assist you with the full process of setting up, creating opt-in offers, how to advertise it on your blog, how to create your first email, designing…etc. Find out more by clicking right HERE!
Okay Chelsea, get to it, how’d you get your 100 subscribers?
ALRIGHT, now that you got the basics and know that I will find you if you do not get an email list going soon (kidding.. but seriously, hop on it), let’s go into how I reached my first 100 subscribers.
- Firstly, I developed an opt-in offer before ANYTHING.
An opt-in is essentially the ONLY way you will drive attention for someone to sign up for your list. You have to bring value to the subscriber, because why else would they want to give you their email address?
- My first opt-in offer which is still doing very well at driving subscribers to my list, is a PDF guide that I created with tremendous information and resources of all the essential tools a blogger needs.
Below is an advertisement graphic I created for the opt in:
- I created a sign up list for this PDF guide, created the sign up form, and got the web link for the form.
- Once I had the form link, I advertised like crazyyy.
This entailed creating a Pinterest Graphic advertising my opt-in offer, and attaching the URL link. I also tweet about the opt-in offer a couple times a day, as well as occasionally posting about it on Instagram.
(Pinterest Graphic I created for the offer)
*tip: I got great feedback! People would tweet me screenshots or say “This is amazing, everyone should sign up”, if this happens, you want to SHARE that. I always retweet that sort of thing, or screenshot and put it on my Instagram Stories, spread the feedback!*
- I placed opt-in offers on my blog, seems common sense but make sure it’s clear to see and looks appealing!
Again, for this, I got the sign up form link from Mail chimp, and went to my blog editor within WordPress, placed an advertisement image about the opt-in on my primary sidebar attached to the sign up form link, so that people could click the image and be redirected to the sign up form automatically.
An alternative is to take the Mail chimp HTML code and create an embedded form instead. I do this at the top of my blog site, as well as within my blog posts.
- Finally, I always end my blog posts with the opt-in! Always include it, because many people will see the offer and scroll past it at first, but if you include it once again before they leave your site, they are more likely to give in and consider signing up!
So there you have it! The key main focal points to take away here are..
1. Create a valuable opt-in offer
2. Advertise on your blog in at least 3 different places
3. Promote on social media DAILY
