Hey hey loves – this is a post I’ve been wanting to write for a while. Simply because, I’ve been there. I was once that girl in the corner on the treadmill at the gym, doing the same damn workout, too afraid to try anything else.
It gets boring as hell.
And you’re holding yourself back if you do that. I promise you. Which is why I am writing this post! In hopes that my words and experience can get through to you and help you CONQUER that gym fear!
So a little background on me..
I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life. Literally. From being bullied younger, losing/gaining weight, eating disorders, I’ve been there. I found the gym to be my safe haven over time, it is truly my therapy.
I have to give credit and recognition to my boyfriend in this post in all honesty.. because man, without him and his influence on me, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to experience the strength, confidence, and freedom that the gym gives me right now.
So thank you babe, if you’re reading this.
But, I don’t want you reading this to be like me, and to wait around for someone to enter your life and magically “change” you or be that push. You should be your own push, always.
I’ve incorporated fitness into my life for quite a while now, but not in the right way. I did the same exact workout, every…single..day.. Or at least most days. That was, jumping on the treadmill in the corner, and “running.” I put apostrophes there because, I thought I was running, but now that I look back, I wasn’t challenging myself in any way shape or form.
Challenge yourself. Please.
Fast forward.. I meet my handsome amazing boyfriend and he introduces me into his version of the gym.. weights.
He guides me around and walks me through how to use the machines, because truly, that was my biggest fear, how to use the damn machines!
I’ll never forget how empowering it felt to lift those weights and to feel my workout burn in a different way. I’ll also never forget when he had to leave and fly back home, I was faced to go to the gym by myself, and continue lifting weights.
I was scared shitless in all honesty. I remember panic texting my boyfriend the first session I went in without him, asking him, “omg I don’t know what I’m doing”, and sending him photos of machines and saying, “what do I do on this?” lol.
Point is, I’ve been there okay, in fact, I was probably worse than where you’re at, I was horrified of change.
BUT…. I did it! Now, I go into the gym nearly 6 times a week, BY MYSELF, just me and my headphones.. zoning out, and training with weights.
I try new things, I lift weights and don’t care what people may think when they look at me, I walk out, and I PAY ATTENTION to how I FEEL afterwards. This is what you need to do. Pay attention closely to your feelings when you walk out of that gym after trying something new, challenging yourself, THIS is what matters, okay? Not the fears of, oh what will these people think of me, what if I look dumb? No, cut that b.s. out.
So, I’ll do a little list of some tasks that I found to help me overcome my mental fears to try new things.
Also, just to note, I’m not saying you MUST do weights here, I’m just sharing my experience.. I am preaching in this post, that you should CHALLENGE yourself. Do not be that scared girl in the corner on the treadmill, do new things, test your body and your strength.
- Power through the first week, ALONE. (Or if you have a gym buddy, go for it! Bring them!)
So you’re reading this, and thinking to yourself, “yes… I keep doing the same workouts, I’ve been too fearful to try new things.. okay.. tomorrow’s the day, I will go in and try something new”, GREAT! This is what you must keep in mind; POWER THROUGH. Get through that first week and gain familiarity of whatever new thing you are trying is.
- Have a plan in mind before you step in the gym.
Sure, when you are just starting out and going to try something you’ve never done, for example, weight lifting, or HIIT cardio (High Intensity Interval Training), you may not have a CLEAR visual of what’s going to be happening. What I mean here, is know what you are coming to the gym to do. Come with a mission, and execute it.
- STOP CARING WHAT THAT PERSON WHO LOOKS GLANCING AT YOU IS THINKING!
Effff it! F THEM ALL! I’m serious here, honestly. You will learn this over time.. every single person in that gym doing their own exercise is worried ABOUT THE SAME EXACT THING. Don’t let your mind and fear of what people “think” get in the way of you and your fitness!
- WANT IT. YOU HAVE TO WANT IT.
Okay, so there’s two kinds of people in this world. Those who want it, and those who don’t. You either want fitness or you don’t. You SHOULD want fitness, but I’m not here to force it down your throat; hopefully if you’ve made it this far on the post, it’s because you WANT it.
- Set GOALS! Let goals drive you.
Obviously you don’t want to be wandering around in the gym with an empty clueless mind. Have goals! Ex: Today I want to push myself as far as I can with how much I squat, or how much I can lift.
Bottom line, I am SO SO passionate about how the gym makes me feel. I constantly see people around me or even online, who hold themselves back, simply because the gym or people intimidate them… No. Just no. Don’t be one of those people.
In life, you will encounter people, you will encounter intimidating circumstances, but do not ever let it become a barrier between you and having a kickass workout, okay?
I would literally be THRILLED if even just one person reads this post, and they decide to go for it, go into the gym, not give an f with anyone thinks, and has a KICKASS time. I sincerely hope this helped you reading this to develop a little different mentality of the gym as a whole!
